Less than 50 km. from Trieste,  on the old Ljubljana – Postojna road, between the villages of Kalce and Planina lies the tiny village of Grčarevec. At its centre stands the small church of Saint Luke, and next to it  the house of the Žigon family, where they have operated a country inn since 1980. The Žigon Pension stands at the edge of the plain of Planina, through which the world-renowned Unica River flows. From May 1st through November 30th, the official fishing season, the Žigon Pension is frequently the gathering place of dry-fly fishermen, who come to this corner of Slovenia from around the world. In fact, in this enchanted spot surrounded by hills, the tourist season coincides with the fishing season. The Unica abounds in brown trout, grayling, pike and cyprinids and the trout of the Unica are among the finest in Slovenia, in both appearance and size. The Unica River is a real paradise for dry-fly fishermen, who consider it among the best rivers in Europe for this sport.

The Žigon Pension sleeps up to 20 guests in 10 rooms, each with bath, TV, telephone and free wi-fi internet. Guests can choose half-pension or bed & breakfast arrangements according to their needs. Grčarevec, and the Žigon Pension, are a mere 30 minutes’ drive from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, yet the pristine natural surroundings lend themselves not only to fishing, but also to numerous other activities such as biking, hiking, bird-watching.

The caves of Postojna, the ruins of the Haasberg castle of Planina (destroyed during World War II), the castle of Predjama, the castle of Snežnik, the cave out of which the Unica River flows and Lake Cerknica, are all tourist attractions an easy 20-minute drive from the Žigon Pension.

The Unica River is unique, and well worth a visit in winter or spring as well. In November the Unica floods the fields surrounding it, transforming the entire valley into a large lake. In the spring, when the waters recede, flowers of many colours and scents carpet the fields, enchanting whoever has the good fortune to admire them.
